A Couple Good Books

Like most families with young children, we read a lot of children's books over here at our house. The library is a favorite spot for us and we visit it weekly, filling our bag to the brim with books (and shows and dinosaurs too, of course).

I'll be blunt, there are some really CRAPPY kids books out there. The kind where while you are reading it, in your mind you are thinking, "who on earth thought this book worthy of publication." Either the illustrations are lack-luster, the storyline drab, or the rhyming so horrendously flung together that it hurts just to let the words slip out from between your lips. Some books are offenders of all three.

Don't get me wrong, we have also read many books that are entertaining, and the classics are always enjoyable to read again. However there are two books that really stand triumphant in my mind. I never pass up a chance to read them, with or with out my kids. The illustrations are beautiful, wording succinct, poetic, and the story lines are strong.

These books are:
Pete & Pickles, by Berkeley Breathed,

and The Circus Ship by Chris Van Dusen.

Bryan and I LOVE them, and our kids do too.
