Unexpected weekend events.

My Mom was trimming some trees in her back yard this past Saturday. The ladder she was standing on gave out from underneath her, causing her to plummet to the ground. She fell hard, felt a tremendous amount of pain in her back, and suffered a gash to her head. Luckily my little sister heard my Mom calling for her, and was able to help (thank you Julia).

After several hours of waiting in two different hospital emergency room's, numerous x-rays, an ambulance transport, 3 cat scans, and lots of close encounters with needles, the decision was made that she would need emergency back surgery. Major bummer. Her L 4 vertebrae burst from the impact of the fall. Seriously, it burst. I saw the pictures.

She had surgery yesterday (Sunday June 6) morning and is still in the hospital recovering. The surgery went well, her L3, L4, and L5 vertebrae (lower back) are now screwed together and stabilized along side with rods. The after surgery x-ray pictures are pretty crazy. She has been able to move her toes and legs and is expected to make a full recovery. Thank Heaven. However, she will be sporting a sweet custom fit back brace for the next 8-10 weeks while she heals. .

It has been really tough to see her hurting in a hospital bed these past few days. I feel so bad for her, but am very grateful that her injuries were not worse. I am so glad all my siblings live close by. We have been spending a lot of time together as a family in the hospital which has been nice, even if it is under undesirable circumstances. My Dad has stayed by her side all weekend, and has slept in the hospital room with her too. She is so important to us, and even though I know she will be okay, it really sends small shock waves of anxiety through my heart and soul to see her this way.

I love my Mom. I consider having her as my Mother to be one of the greatest gifts Heavenly Father has given me. I feel that exact same way about my Dad too. They are gems. I am lucky they are mine. This situation reminds me of that even more.

Thank you to all friends and family that have extended their love, support, and prayers! My whole family appreciates it, and we hope this summer is full of relaxing healthy healing for our Mom.
