The chickens are still squawking.

(Oscar helps me wash, and put the eggs away each morning.)
I have not posted about the chickens in a while. Don't worry, they are all alive. Still eating and pooping, that's for sure.

Ever since we built the chicken run I hardly ever think about them during the day. I like it that way! We let them out in the morning, collect any eggs, and check their food/water supply. At some point during the day I usually walk out a bunch of kitchen scraps to the compost pile, and let them rummage for yummies. Other than that, I don't really think much about the birds until we put them away around dusk.

Keeping the chickens contained in their chicken run has really made having chickens pretty enjoyable for us. Of course we still have to clean out their poopy-coop, and deal with the occasional smell of wet chicken poop after it rains. But as long as their mess stays in their coop/run, I have no reason to complain. It is amazing how much more you love your pets when you are not wiping their sh*t off your shoes 24-7. Of course it also helps that they are laying 3-5 eggs a day. I have not had to buy eggs from the store in months. We love it!

A little story: The other evening it was Bryan's turn to put the chickens away. As he was carrying their freshly filled water buckets back into the coop, one of the buckets hit the edge of a roost (where the chickens sleep) and completely tipped it over. Pouring nearly all of the water right down Bryan's leg and into his boots. His pant legs, socks, and boots were drenched. He was so annoyed. However he was slightly less annoyed when he discovered the chickens had left us a gift of SIX beautiful fat eggs!

The things you do for a fresh laid egg.

I love how Oscar's jammies match his eyes: blue & red-eye. Future designer for sure.
