Thursday morning was rough. Two neighborhood dogs (jerky bird dogs, mind you), got loose. Reece barked as a warning. I threw on the nearest clothes (Yeah, it may have been 11:00 AM with me still in my skivvies). I bolted out the back door just as these fur covered idiots chased my chickens all over our yard. Yes, I WAS screaming expletives at the top of my boisterous lungs. Feathers were flying EVERYWHERE, and the squawking, oh the squawking! I saw two chickens fly over my neighbors fence, and pulled one devil-dog off of Coconut. I had no clue where the others were.
I grabbed the collar of the other dog, and threw these large pups in our garage. Oscar was watching and screaming for me the whole time, thank heavens Angus was napping. I phoned the owners and asked them, not-so-calmly, to come get the dogs. In the meantime I went over to Ray's house to hopefully find my other chickens. Long story short, his little tiny dogs attacked and killed/ate two of my chickens. I started bawling as we pulled them away from their jaws.
So, two were dead, and I went and found two alive in my yard, one was still missing. Two little boys came to get there dogs. Good riddance! Thankfully my family rushed over to help me clean up the mess, and look for the missing bird. Although at that time we had no luck in finding her.
Fast forward to Thursday afternoon...the dog owners dropped by 50 dollars to buy us new chickens (which was very kind).
Later, Oscar, Angus and I went out back to pick our tomatillos, when I spotted the missing chicken on the roof of my neighbors garden shed. I went and retrieved her, before Gus and Chauncey (the neighbor's dogs) could have at them. Once reunited, the three remaning chickens stayed hudled together for the rest of the day.
BLECH. That was kind of crummy.
Oscar was so sweet, while I was crying he kept saying, "Mom, I can find a really cool band-aid for you." He has learned well, that a band-aid can solve many a problem.
Today we brought home 3 new chickens...more on that to come. All I will say about my next post is, NAKED NECK.
